How do you know if you are talking to a broker or a carrier?
Most brokers will make every effort to hide from you the fact that they are brokers. Statements like: “We have thousands of trucks crisscrossing the continental United States”, “Yes, they will pick the car up at your front door and deliver at your front door” or “We guarantee the pickup and delivery date”.
False Promises
Where brokers are a necessity in shipping most cars, they are not the actual auto hauler, and they cannot make promises that must be kept by the hauler. Obviously, the more promises and guarantees they make, the less likely they are to come to fruition, making the process stressful for both you and the carrier.
Many carriers are full size and even though the moving truck may get into your neighborhood, they are enclosed and do not have exposed autos that may get hit by tree limbs. Full size Auto Haulers are the lowest sitting, tallest and usually the heaviest trucks on the road, excluding Oversized Loads with special permits. Auto Haulers cannot run over curbs like a usual tractor-trailer as they bottom out, sitting only inches off the ground.
Many articulate closer to the midpoint and cannot Jackknife to make sharp turns like a regular tractor trailer. Only the driver of a rig can decide where they can safely go. Many insurance companies exclude cargo coverage in residential neighborhoods for Auto Haulers as that is where the most claims for damage are caused.
Red Flags
In order to remove stress and anxiety from the entire process, transparency and honesty become the most important attributes of your Broker and who understand the limitations of the actual hauler carrying your vehicle. Most do not as they learned brokering from behind a computer not from behind the wheel of an Auto Hauler.
Look at the website of your Broker. Does the word Broker appear anywhere? First red flag.
